RYA Yachtmaster (Offshore)
The Yachtmaster Offshore course will build further on your practical and theoretical knowledge established in the “Yachtmaster (Coastal) Skipper” course. This course gives potential skippers the opportunity to thoroughly revise both practical and theoretical subjects.
This level of competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers. You will spend five days onboard the yacht with a fully qualified, Yachtmaster Examiner prior to taking your independently assessed examination.
Price: £560 per person. This includes:
- Taxes – (18% IVA).
- Breakfasts / lunches, 2 evening meals and accommodation aboard.
- Marina fees.
- Airport collection service from Jerez or Gibraltar from 1400 onwards on the day of the course.
- Loan of wet weather clothing and lifejacket).
- MAX 5 students.
Commercial Endorsement Examination Fee: £170 from Jan 2010.
Your training course will primarily be in local waters as it is normally found that at this level boat handling under power and sail in close quarters is required rather than long distance, offshore passages. The instructor will tailor the course to your needs but our experience usually leads us to emphasis the following subjects:
- Passage Planning.
- Skippering Techniques.
- Man-overboard Recovery.
- Meteorology.
- Close Quarters Handling.
- Pilotage in Restricted Visibility.
You are strongly advised to arrive for the course already having a thorough knowledge of the Collision Regulations, particularly in relation to lights, shapes and sound signals. A successful candidate is an experienced yachtsman who has a very good level of theoretical knowledge and he or she will be able to skipper a cruising yacht on passages up to 150 miles from port. Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster.
Suggested minimum pre-course experience & assumed knowledge: (If independent examination is required)
- Navigation, meteorology, collision regulations safety and passage planning.
- Have logged a minimum of 50 days onboard (2 days as skipper).
- 12 night hours and 2500 nautical sea miles.
- Five passages over 60 miles, two overnight and two as skipper.
- First Aid Certificate & Short Range Radio Course Certificate.
Please note, that if the independent examination is NOT needed then your quantity of sea miles and night hours are of less significance. If you are short of sea miles and would like to qualify for the independent examination. We can also arrange mile building passages to the Canaries, Portugal and the Balearic Islands.
