There are few things in this world more challenging than handling your boat in close quarters with other boats, the thrill of the competition, the excitement of beating to windward neck and neck with other well-found vessels!

Unfortunately, the excitement of the race course is something many sailors never experience. Cruising sailors who wouldn’t think twice about crossing hundreds of miles of open water blanch at the idea of racing around buoys. Daysailors who are perfectly comfortable sailing their boats through crowded moorings think they aren’t ready to mix it up with the “big boys”. Others worry about safety. It can be scary sailing at high speed in a very small area with dozens of other yachts. Still for all it’s “terrors,” the race course is, in reality, a remarkably safe place and getting out there is more than worth the risk of losing a little gel-coat or tasting an occasional helping of humble pie!

Through good quality and carefully planned training, the courses and regattas we offer and compete in allow everyone to learn new skills and improve the standard of their racing quickly and effectively. It is true; many people get a position on a race boat then regularly become stuck in the same role and therefore never progress. The learning curve is gradual and rarely are there opportunities to try out new roles. This is understandable as most crews cannot spend enough time training and therefore there are few opportunities to hone new disciplines.

Sailing Excellence changes that by providing courses and competing in local regattas allowing and encouraging everyone to try new roles, in a bid to improve their overall understanding of the principals of racing; the courses are a great way to improve all round ability and awareness, which will inevitably increase the standard of racing for everyone.
